What is Thumb and Pouch?
Thumb and Pouch is a Klondike variant with a relaxed tableau build rule. Where Klondike requires alternating colors (red on black, black on red), Thumb and Pouch allows any suit on any suit as long as the rank is one lower — the only constraint is descending rank. This creates significantly more legal tableau destinations per card, making blockage less common and recovery from poor positions easier. The stock and hidden-card structure remain identical to Klondike.
Full rules
One 52-card deck. Seven tableau columns dealt in Klondike-style triangle (1–7 cards, top card face-up). Foundations build upward by suit from Ace to King. Tableau builds downward by rank, any suit — a 7 of spades can receive a 6 of hearts, clubs, or diamonds. Only Kings fill empty columns. Stock draws one or three cards at a time; waste recycles as in standard Klondike. Win by moving all 52 cards to foundations.
Any-suit vs. alternating-color building
In Klondike, each card has at most two legal tableau destinations (the two opposite-color cards one rank higher). In Thumb and Pouch, each card has up to eight legal destinations (any of the up-to-eight cards one rank higher, regardless of suit). This dramatically reduces the frequency of “no moves available” situations and makes the game noticeably more winnable than standard Klondike.
However, the foundation sequence still requires suit tracking. Cards moving freely between suits in the tableau may create situations where same-suit cards are buried beneath mismatched suit stacks, complicating the path to foundations.
