Thumb and Pouch is a Klondike variant with a relaxed tableau build rule. Where Klondike requires alternating colors (red on black, black on red), Thumb and Pouch accepts a card one rank lower in any different suit. Same-color placements can be legal when the suits differ; same-suit placements cannot. Empty columns also accept any card, not only Kings.
One 52-card deck. Seven tableau columns dealt in Klondike-style triangle (1–7 cards, top card face-up). Foundations build upward by suit from Ace to King. Tableau builds downward by rank in a different suit — a 7 of spades can receive a 6 of hearts, clubs, or diamonds, but not a 6 of spades. Any card or movable run can fill an empty column. Stock draws one card at a time; the waste can be recycled. Win by moving all 52 cards to foundations.
In Klondike, each card can land on a card one rank higher in the opposite color. Thumb and Pouch instead asks whether the suits differ, so a red card may land on another red card of a different suit. With one deck, up to three suits can supply a valid parent rank.
However, the foundation sequence still requires suit tracking. Cards moving freely between suits in the tableau may create situations where same-suit cards are buried beneath mismatched suit stacks, complicating the path to foundations.
