Hope Deferred family

See how many Clubs the prescribed deals uncover.

Hope Deferred and Abandon Hope reveal up to three non-Club cards per packet, removing Clubs encountered along the way. A fixed number of packets ends each pass; remaining cards are reshuffled for up to two further passes. The player advances the deal but does not select cards or packet destinations.

Hope Deferred’s shorter pack

Hope Deferred uses a 32-card pack of Aces and 7s through Kings. It seeks eight Clubs. A pass reveals up to five packets, each collecting one non-Club card for each of three tableau positions; Clubs encountered first are removed. After the fifth packet, the remaining cards can be reshuffled for the next pass. Removing all eight Clubs by the end of the third pass wins.

Abandon Hope’s full pack

Abandon Hope uses all 52 cards and seeks thirteen Clubs. Its pass permits up to eight three-position packets before the remaining cards are reshuffled. The same automatic removal and three-pass limit apply. The extra ranks change the pack size and how long a pass lasts; they do not add placement choices.

Read the result, not a move tree

For example, if the next stock card is a Club, it leaves immediately and dealing continues until a non-Club fills the current packet position or the stock empties. A packet with several Clubs may therefore remove more than three total cards. Since there is only one legal advance at a time, watching Club counts helps you understand a pass but cannot change the seeded outcome.
