What is Eight Cards?
Eight Cards is a compact open-layout pairing game. Eight cards are dealt face-up in a 2×4 rectangle; all are available simultaneously. Remove pairs of pip cards (Ace through Ten) totaling exactly 11, and remove face cards (Jack, Queen, King) in matched sets. The stock refills the layout as pairs are removed. The game is won by clearing all 52 cards. An optional ninth card can be dealt face-up at any time as a one-time assist.
Full rules
Eight cards dealt face-up; all available. Legal removals:
- Two pip cards totaling 11: 10+A, 9+2, 8+3, 7+4, 6+5
- One Jack, one Queen, one King removed as a trio
After each removal, refill positions from stock. The ninth-card assist: once per game, flip one additional card from stock as a temporary ninth option. Win by clearing all 52 cards.
The ninth-card assist
The optional ninth card is Eight Cards’ unique feature. It can break a stuck position by introducing a card not currently visible — potentially completing a pair or trio. Best used when the eight visible cards have no legal pairs and the only JQK combination requires a card not in the current layout. Save it for genuine stalemates rather than using it immediately.
