Ninety-One strategy

Change the top-card total deliberately.

Thirteen face-up piles hold four cards each. You may move the top card of any pile with more than one card to any other pile. The thirteen exposed top cards must total exactly 91.

Calculate the actual change

Moving a top card exposes the next card in its source pile and covers the target pile. The moved card cancels the old source top, so the net change in the total is the newly revealed source card minus the covered target card.

For example, if an Ace covers a King in the source pile and you move that Ace onto a pile topped by a Ten, the source changes from 1 to 13 and the target changes from 10 to 1. The total rises by 3. This calculation works regardless of suit because suits do not restrict transfers.

Keep useful sources available

A one-card pile can receive cards but cannot supply another move until it has at least two. Before moving from a two-card pile, check whether exposing its bottom card helps the target total; that bottom card will then be fixed until another card lands there. A pile with three or four cards has more future reveal choices, though only its current top may move.

Recalculate after each move. A transfer that reaches 91 wins immediately; when the visible total differs from 91, compare the possible revealed and covered values to the exact change you need.
